I didn’t know Vincent van Gogh’s night paintings. “It often seems to me that the night is much more alive and richly coloured than the day.” In the gallery, I came to realise it’s in his night scenes, like ‘The Starry Night’, we see his brilliance with colour.
The sea isn’t really blue. The grass isn’t really green. Night isn’t ever really black. They are a dance of colours, only truly captured by those who study the scene.
